Die Publikation enthält die Beiträge und den Abendvortrag der gemeinsamen Tagung des Projektes "Digitales Archiv der Reformation" und des Lehrstuhles für Kirchengeschichte der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena unter dem Thema "Reformation vor Ort. Zum Quellenwert von Visitationsprotokollen", die 2014 in Jena stattfand. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die ersten protestantischen Visitationen in den mitteldeutschen Territorien und ihr schriftlicher Niederschlag, die Visitationsprotokolle.
Die Aufsätze zeigen aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln den Quellenwert dieser wichtigen Schriftzeugnisse für die wissenschaftliche Geschichtsschreibung und die Heimatgeschichtsforschung auf. Außerdem werden Überlegungen zur Anforderungen und Grenzen digitaler Editionen im Internet angestellt.
