Hey, Mily! Can you meet me in the ladies' room for a moment?Emily Winters frowned at Carmella Lopez, her father's secretary.-You know I have a meeting right now.-It's important. Emily looked at her father and then back at Carmella."I thought we'd decided to drop this whole thing." She looked back at her father, who was currently on the phone. "My father's plans for me to marry someone from the company have gone down the drain.
There are no single people left."-Jack Devon remains."Yes, I know, " Emily replied. Jack was a difficult man, and Emily's relationship with him wasn't exactly smooth. He constantly forced her to be on the defensive, both professionally and personally. He was one of Boston's most eligible bachelors and was always surrounded by beautiful women. He kept the secret of who he really was a secret, and it was impossible to learn anything about his past.
What Emily knew for sure was that Jack was never going to ask her out. That was reassuring to know. That way, she wouldn't have to worry about him no matter how much her father tried to force a relationship between them. A few weeks ago, Emily had overheard a conversation between Jack and her father in which he had dared to call her a "spoiled brat."Her father had laughed instead of defending her, making it clear how desperate he was to find her a husband.
And she had reaffirmed once again her determination not to risk her professional reputation just to please her father. Even though Jack was the most handsome man in the company and her father was a great negotiator, she wasn't willing to be fooled by either of them.  "That's precisely who we need to talk about, and before your meeting, " Carmella whispered, then walked briskly toward the restroom.
Emily followed her with a frown. Once in the bathroom, and after making sure it was completely empty, Carmella turned to her.-I know you've never been comfortable with our plan to find wives for single Wintersoft employees, especially not for Jack Devon..."I don't like to interfere in anyone's personal life, " Emily interrupted."Of course not. But we both know it had to be done." Carmella gestured toward Emily's father, Lloyd's, office.
"If we hadn't done it, someone else would have. And you wouldn't have liked the results. I saw what happened the last time your dad pressured you into dating someone at the company. Todd Baxter screwed you... and not just in your career.""Okay, we had no choice, " Emily admitted. As much as she despised using personal information about her colleagues to set them up with potential girlfriends before her father pressured them to ask her out, she was even more concerned about protecting her heart and her reputation...
not to mention her father's. Lloyd Winters was a respected man dedicated to his company, but both Emily and Carmella knew he had a soft spot when it came to his daughter. He was determined to marry her off to someone at the company, and Emily hadn't been able to dissuade him from his attempts, not even after the debacle with Todd Baxter.
