An unnamed narrator, forty years old and consumed by spite, retreats into a basement room in St. Petersburg and begins to talk - about free will, about the humiliations he has never forgiven, about the people he has never stopped resenting. He is petty, self-aware, contradictory, and impossible to look away from.
