In ihrer detaillierten Untersuchung zeichnet Ulrike Becker ein umfassendes Bild der deutsch-ägyptischen Beziehungen zwischen 1949 und 1965. Die bundesdeutsche Außenpolitik der Nachkriegszeit gegenüber den arabischen Staaten und gegenüber Israel wurde von Akteuren und Interessen bestimmt, in denen ideologische Überzeugungen und Dispositionen aus der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus fortwirkten. Das hohe Maß an personeller Kontinuität in den deutschen Behörden und Ministerien - insbesondere im Auswärtigen Amt - bot dafür eine entscheidende Voraussetzung.
Die Ergebnisse der Autorin mahnen zur Skepsis hinsichtlich einer allzu erfolgsgeschichtlichen Deutung der frühen Bundesrepublik. The study paints a comprehensive picture of German-Egyptian relations between 1949 and 1965 and also shows the extent to which the Federal Republic's policy toward the Arab states and toward Israel was determined by actors and interests in which ideological convictions and dispositions from the National Socialist era continued to operate.
The high degree of personnel continuity, especially in the Foreign Office, provided the prerequisite for this.
