Résumé

Grief and grudges echo among allies when the women of Wolfsburg are left in the main castle, charged with preparing for a potential civil war and protecting the pregnant Lady Sabina. Not that Brynhild thinks she can help. She has to get back to Meiser in time for the harvest, and she would rather get away from her cousin, Margaret, who holds her responsible for her family's fall. Unfortunately, when Lady Sabina is found dead in the woods, Brynhild's mother informs Brynhild and her friend Bigitte they must discover the culprit.
Then Lady Margaret's room is set on fire. In order to solve both crimes, the two women must navigate Margaret's distrust, something that becomes harder when Brynhild discovers a secret about her own part in the fate of Margaret's family. Can they discover the murderer before he endangers them and the emperor's cause?
