Ludwig (Louis) Stoffer (1889-1956) stammte aus Rufach (Rouffach) im Elsass. Seine Gesellenjahre als Schlosser und der Militärdienst führten ihn in die Welt hinaus. Mit einem Schiffs-Kameraden versuchte er sich in verschiedenen Bereichen in den USA, so als Handwerker in einer Goldmine, als Auto-Ausstatter und bei der Eisenbahn. In Tacoma fand er schließlich seine aus dem Burgenland stammende Frau Anna.
Nachdem die Familie mit Mühe die Zeit der Wirtschaftskrisen durchgestanden hatte, gelang es Louis, eine eigene Schlosserwerkstatt aufzubauen, die heute noch in Centralia (Washington) existiert und von seinem Sohn und einem Enkel betrieben wird. Nachdem kürzlich eine Biographie Louis Stoffers erschienen ist, bringt der vorliegende Beitrag eine Auswahl der Ansichtspostkarten und Fotos aus seinem Nachlass.
Viele sind nicht datiert, etliche der Absender nicht zu ermitteln, die Texte (sämtlich transkribiert) in teilweise ungewöhnlicher Orthographie, so dass das Material kaum in eine überzeugende Ordnung gebracht werden kann. Doch sind die visuellen und textlichen Dokumente auch außerhalb des familiären Kontextes sozialgeschichtlich von Interesse. Postkartensammler werden sich über die Reproduktion zahlreicher Ansichten freuen.

His apprentice years as a metalworker as well as his military service took him out into the world at an early age. He tried with various comrades to establish himself in different businesses in the USA, for example at goldmining, as an auto outfitter and for the railroad. In Tacoma, he finally found a wife, Anna from the Burgenland.
After the family scraped through the Depression, he founded his own metal workshop, still existing today in Centralia, Washington and run by his son and grandson. A biography about Louis Stoffer was recently published; this volume presents a selection of postcards and photos from his past. Many are not dated, some of the consigners can't be identified, the texts - which have been transcribed into English - had unusual spelling and punctuation making them somewhat difficult to organize.
Even so, the visual impact and nuggets of information make for interesting reading outside of the family circle. Collectors of postcards will also find the reproduction of the cards pleasing. Includes indices.
