Mary-Anne lives in a small village in the year 1894. Her father has been killed in a barn-raising, and nowher mother works to support the small farm they live on. One day, she sees a notice on the tack board in the village, and secretly applies for a post for both herselfand her mother. When she gets a favorable reply, she is bursting with excitement. She is to be a governess to Mr. Batterman's daughter.
Mary-Annehas experience helping these poor souls, her own sister was viewed with skepticism by many. Katie was born not being able to talk, yet somehow, both sisters forged a strong communication system. But will momma agree?;she worries, racing home through a path she knows well. But the light of day is fading, and no woman or man should be out in these woods after dark, not with the ever-present threat of the gypsies...
Finally, they arrive. But things begin to go wrong, and a tangled sequence of events finds Mary-Anne guarding secrets. There is something sinister here, Mary-Anne can feel it. She meets a child unlike any other, and together, they form a strange alliance. Besides, Mary-Anne needs all the help she can get, for a jealous housekeeper is determined to make her life miserable as well...
