Rafael Menton's "Madame Fabienne", contains both books of his voodoo misadventure involving the Curzon-brothers, formerly of London and later, and more unhappily, of Haiti. We open with "Revisiting A Woman of Haiti", and Mr Menton's description of how a smug, haughty and cynical professor, scornful of superstition and the occult, is brought to his knees - both figuratively and literally - before a conjure woman from the Indies.
An island woman who is visiting London at the invitation of the professor's wealthier - and far more credulous - friend. A conjure woman with mesmeric abilities who will not only enslave his senses but see that his beautiful English-Rose fiancé takes a delight in doing the same. All this before insisting he accompany her back to Haiti to serve her as a. "Bound in Port-au-Prince" follows this, as the misadventure that started in London and ended badly in Haiti repeats itself with the surviving Curzon brother.
The younger brother whose older and more widely known sibling left for the Carribean some years before. Drawn to depart by a force that overrode his own wishes. And doing so to find only disgrace, torment, and death at the hands of the island woman with mesmeric powers who had taken a shine to him. Strange and mesmeric powers that are now calling to the younger of the two to join her that events might be repeated!   Believable interracial fantasy and occult misadventure in the world of female-led fiction, for those readers with a desire to have a light shone on the more.
