Der Band hat zwei Ziele. Das erste ist, ein altbekanntes Thema neu zu setzen und auszudeuten. Die Lebendigkeit der Kirchen ist insofern ein altes Thema, als sie in der Regel eine Facette von Anstrengungen geistlicher Erneuerung ist.
Das zweite Ziel besteht darin, praktische Erfahrungen sichtbar zu machen, in denen sich Religiosität und Kirchlichkeit entweder harmonisch oder spannungsreich miteinander verbinden. Beide Zielsetzungen dienen maßgeblich dazu, Perspektiven für die Praxis vitaler, vitalisierter und revitalisierter Kirchen und zu ihrer Erforschung aufzuzeigen.
