Before a town clock marked the square, time belonged more readily to the church bell, the workshop, the household, and the changing seasons. Public clocks altered that arrangement. This history follows their spread through late medieval and early modern towns, where mechanisms, bells, maintenance, and municipal authority made a shared hour visible and audible. It considers the makers who kept the machines running and the citizens whose work, trade, meetings, and expectations were gradually coordinated around a public signal.
