In this bilingual English-Tongan book, Mangisi shares his memories of growing up with flying foxes roosting at his home in his village in Hihifo, Tonga, in the 1950's and 1960's. It describes how and why his grandfather made a sanctuary for them at his home in Ha'avakatolo, away from their traditional base in Kolovai, where long ago Ata, the major titleholder of Hihifo, gave them protection. Mangisi's stories discuss the importance of flying foxes in village life and the clever ways villagers have found to catch and make money from them while staying within cultural rules and respecting the authority of the high chief.
And he asks what this little animal and the toa trees it prefers might tell today's generations about the history of Hihifo and Tonga. The book concludes with his family's search for the kupesi (stencil design for tapa cloth) that the his aunt made using images of the flying fox. This is the third book in the Manatu Melie series. It is intended to be read aloud and shared with family members as well as enjoyed in personal reading.
