Résumé
A boutique gallery glows against a wet city night when Jack Colder arrives to meet Celeste, a curator in a blood-red dress with a missing partner and a problem she doesn't trust police to name. Her star artist, Ezra Vale, has vanished after hanging Cassandra-a sold-out series of nine portraits he boasts are "not metaphors" but true murders committed in paint. Eight women stare down from the walls, each canvas hiding codes in graphite grids, UV letters, and ghosted numbers.
The ninth is a blinding blank: double-primed, waiting. Mirrors ring the room, doubling every piece and every lie. Security, Celeste says-though the lenses Jack finds behind the bevels feel more like confession booths than cameras. In the basement, a quiet crate and a strange sweetness suggest something worse than a no-show artist. Upstairs, under UV, the blank canvas hums with an unseen grid. At midnight, the gesso trembles and a thin red line appears where no brush moves, bleeding down the white in measured drops.
Behind the frame lies a pump, a bag, and, past a false wall, a preserved face lit for exhibition. With the crooked-tie detective and the woman with the umbrella on their way, Jack has to decide how much to reveal, how much to leave hidden, and whether Ezra's "nine witnesses, one audience" was ever meant for a court-or only for a city that loves to watch itself in expensive glass.
