Die Union zwischen Lutheranern und Reformierten am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts wird unterschätzt, ihre prägende Funktion für die meisten Landeskirchen in Deutschland ist meist unbekannt. Vermittlungstheologie und Liberalismus schufen unterschiedliche theologische Systeme innerhalb der Union, die historischen Respekt verdienen. Zugleich steht der Unionsgedanke heute im engen Zusammenhang von Ökumene, Bekenntnis und Entwicklung vor neuen Herausforderungen in den Verständigungsprozessen der "Uniting Churches".
Das Buch gibt eine Übersicht über die Geschichte der deutschen Unionskirchen, Theologien und Theologen.
Dazu treten Fallbeispiele zur Unionsgeschichte aus allen Kontinenten sowie eine Studie zur Rolle der Unionskirchen heute. The Churches of the Union. The book gives an overview of the history of the German Union Churches, of theologies and theologians. In addition there are case studies on the history of the Union from all continents as well as a study on the role of the Union Churches today.
