Résumé

Reflections and Encounters in Development Research through APPEAR The overall objective of APPEAR is to strengthen scientific foundations and institutional capacities in higher education, research, and management at the participating institutions within the thematic framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Since the launch of the program in 2009, 98 preparatory funding projects, 63 academic partnerships, and 11 advanced academic partnerships have been implemented in 24 countries.
In all, 174 APPEAR scholarship holders have successfully completed a master's or PhD program at an Austrian University. APPEAR is funded by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) as part of International Partnerships Austria and is implemented by OeAD - Austria's Agency for Education and Internationalisation. This reader reflects, in a free and formally diverse manner, collaborations in the field of development research - be it through theoretical, biographical, research-technical, or philosophical considerations or through personal encounters, impressions, feelings, reservations, or experiences.
APPEAR has amassed a rich treasure trove of academic work, results, and personal experiences. The contributions presented in this book are a well-chosen selection from the wealth of experience gained in recent years. They are intended to inspire and stimulate further discussion and reflection within the scientific community and beyond. They also highlight the immensely important social aspect of development research and the effort to contribute to a sustainable and, above all, peaceful future.  This book gives a voice to encounters, reflections, and criticism, as well as everyday perceptions in research practice and a room for lasting impressions and narratives about APPEAR and the people who have brought the program and projects to life in many countries and regions.
