Die Johannesapokalypse wurde als Buch universaler Hoffnung in den neutestamentlichen Kanon aufgenommen. Wie aber wurde aus seiner prophetischen trostvollen Hoffnungsbotschaft ein Buch kosmologischer Schrecken und Weltuntergangsszenarien, das »Apokalypse« als Steigerung von »Katastrophe« auffassen lässt? Die Beiträge des Bandes, die aus einem gemeinsam veranstalteten interdisziplinären Seminar des Gräzisten Thomas Paulsen und des Neutestamentlers Stefan Alkier hervorgegangen sind, thematisieren die Reduktion der Johannesapokalypse auf ein Katastrophenbuch von Dante Alighieri über Martin Luther bis hin zu Terry Pratchett und dem Videospiel Darksiders.
Dabei wird deutlich, wie sehr die Rezeptionsgeschichte die Wahrnehmung dieses spannenden Buches einer kosmologischen Theologie prägt und mitunter auch verzerrt. Mit Beiträgen von Stefan Alkier, Dominic Blauth, Simon Dittmann, Luca Ganz, Nadine Haas, Helena Malsy, Thomas Paulsen und Lennart Witek. [Apocalypse Now? Studies on the intertextuality and intermediality of the Apocalypse from Dante to Darksiders] The Apocalypse of John was accepted into the New Testament canon as a book of universal hope.
But how did its prophetic comforting message of hope evolve into a book of cosmological terror and doomsday scenarios letting »apocalypse« understand as climax of »catastrophe« ? The contributions of the volume arised from a jointly organized interdisciplinary seminar of the classical philologist Thomas Paulsen and the New Testament scholar Stefan Alkier. They discuss the reduction of the Apocalypse of John down to a book of catastrophe from Dante Alighieri to Martin Luther up to Terry Pratchett and the video game Darksiders.
