The timber road between Red Creek and Granite Crossing was quiet country-too quiet. Stagecoaches carrying payroll had begun vanishing along that lonely stretch of forest trail, and the few survivors spoke of masked riders who struck fast and disappeared into the trees before anyone could fight back.
