Résumé
Beyond the iron gates of the detention center lies the hustle and bustle of society; within lies a peculiar world, entangled in rules and the struggles of survival. By chance, Captain Sun assigns the protagonist to the women's prison to repair a lightbulb. He encounters for the first time the absurdity and vibrant nature of the female inmates in this oppressive environment-some resorting to "low blood sugar" as a way to coax themselves out of it, others using jokes to mask their loneliness.
He then encounters a diverse group of inmates: Wu Youqian, a scavenger who considers the detention center a "paradise" and refuses to leave; Qi Renyong, a robber with a complex past yet a steadfast conscience; Niu Li, imprisoned for emotional entanglements; and a cyclist attempting suicide. Within the confines of the bars and the system, human fragility and resilience, helplessness and struggle intertwine.
Each inmate's story holds a mirror to the survival and choices of the lower classes, allowing him to discern the forgotten joys and sorrows, and the glimmers of redemption, beneath the rules.
