Résumé

N spite of her unusual name, Coincidence June Farley's life began on a farm in south-central Pennsylvania. The twelve-year-old Coin, a nickname given to her by her grandfather, suffers with a hearing loss. A pre-teen girl with a hearing disability faced many obstacles in 1958 rural life. Coincidence ignores all opposition, choosing to live by her name-defined as a place of serendipitous occurrences.
Coin enjoys life on the Farley farm, shared with her mother, MaryJo and her mother's father, PaPaw. Her favorite time is spent reading inside PaPaw's barn. One winter an unexpected comrade joins her. Coincidence becomes fast friends with the owl named Therion, who subsequently instructs Coin in his system of reference-the way of Life. Coin returns to school in fifth grade wearing two new contraptions-the newest behind-the-ear hearing aids and her first bra.
Life is relatively calm until Coincidence hears the phrase 'change of life' at the lunch table. What is the change of life? Once the school nurse uses the phrase, Coin's concern heightens. Does it have something to do with the physical changes happening to her? God, I hate my boobs. Is she sick? Is she going to die? What's next? And, then, the what's next happens. On the precipice of turning thirteen, a family crisis places the young woman in a conundrum.
Alone and feels forgotten, Coincidence must find the strength to do what's right, even though the adults in her world have failed the test. "Science, capitalized because it's divine, not of human origin, " Therion taught Coincidence in her early years. Will the child's faith endure? Will her willingness to follow the Science addressed by Therion prove enough? Amid regrettable family dynamics and a belly full of opposition, will the emerging teenager continue her search for truth? Travel lightly through this atmospheric journey of Coin's innocence and grace as she navigates both discovery and defeat from the implausible likes of an owl called Therion, and his ambassador, Fly-Guy.
