Résumé
Against the 1956 backdrop of a failing Pennsylvania farm, ten-year-old, home-schooled Coincidence June Farley struggles with indecision. About almost everything. And despite wearing her much disliked hearing-aids-Coin can and does misunderstand and misinterpret things. She thinks she hears others say her indecision is a character flaw. Mulling this hurtful conclusion over and over in her favorite hideout, Coincidence seeks an answer.
A directive, of sorts. Ordinarily, a youngster would ask the adults in her family for help. But Coin feels ignored by her grandfather who suffers from WWI shell shock and by her Mama, whose guilt over her own life choices disguises itself in an obsession about food. Life at home is lonely. But Coin's loneliness is short-lived. For one thing, her curiosity and love of learning goes into high gear when an unexpected arrival to the farm takes residence in the barn-Coin's secret place.
Rambunctious Coincidence seeks to fix her indecision problem with the aid of her 'special' friend. Protecting him at all costs, she keeps his whereabouts a secret from her Mama and PaPaw. An unforeseen situation compels Coincidence to make a decision. FAST! A decision with life and death consequences. Danger seems all around. But this situation is exactly the opportunity Coin needs to appreciate and understand that sometimes indecision is a powerful blessing.
Will her fear of indecision cause her to move in haste and increase the potential danger? Or will she grab the chance and have the courage to wait it out until enlightenment descends?Maybe indecision is not the problem; maybe the problem is the problem! Coincidence Farley is the heart-warming character who makes this unusual coming of age story an adventure, a delight, a study in faith and love.
