Résumé

This book is written in Korean. The buildings keep rising. Kim Yong-man keeps climbing the crane. But time has changed both the construction site and the man working above it. His daughter, once a child waiting for her father to come home, begins preparing for university and eventually builds a life of her own. Younger workers arrive at the construction site. Old colleagues begin to leave. His knees and back remind him that the body that once climbed the crane without hesitation is no longer young.
Yet another morning comes, and Yong-man puts on his work clothes again. Looking back over more than two decades as a crane operator, he wonders what he has actually accomplished. There was no spectacular success. No fortune. No name left in history. Instead, there were paychecks, tuition bills, meals with coworkers, conversations with his wife, his daughter's childhood, old work clothes, early mornings, and countless ordinary days.
Sitting across from his son-in-law one evening, Yong-man realizes that the job he once began simply to make a living has occupied nearly half of his life. Perhaps a life does not need to be extraordinary to have meaning. Half a Lifetime, My Life - Part 2 completes a quiet Korean family story about aging, work, marriage, parenthood, and the accumulated weight of ordinary time.
