PALIMPSEST

Palimpsest is a recursive metafictional novel about identity, authorship, and erasure. The story opens with a warning from the Copyist: this book is a copy of a copy, passed through 187 iterations, each one longer and more unstable. The protagonist discovers a diary in his mother's attic, which seems to describe his own childhood-but the memories are borrowed, and the handwriting isn't his. He meets the Scholar, who explains that every "I" is written by a previous "I." There is no original self; we are all palimpsests-layers of inherited memories and borrowed narratives.
As the protagonist searches for his "first memory, " he finds none. He descends into the margins of the text, where forgotten voices-Marginalians-annotate and survive erasure. The book's acrostics spell out revelations: "I WROTE MYSELF INTO EXISTENCE" and "THE AUTHOR IS THE READER IS THE BOOK." The protagonist learns he is not the first, nor the second, but the 189th copyist. The 188th refused the loop, walked away, and broke the cycle-but in doing so, he rewrote the book as a gift rather than a trap.
The narrative collapses into a corridor where the protagonist meets his own reflection. He transfers the role to the reader: whoever reads becomes the copyist, inherits the memories, and must pass the book on. The final pages address you directly, revealing that you are the 189th-the one who accepted, stayed, and now writes the next version. The book ends with a blank page that isn't blank, and a contract you've already signed by reading.
Palimpsest is a meditation on how we are all copies of copies, and how the act of reading is the act of becoming.
