Shadows of Our Ancestors: The Hidden and Lost Religions of Africa explores Africa's ancient spiritual systems before, alongside, and beyond ancient Egypt, revealing the continent as the world's earliest and most enduring religious landscape. Drawing on archaeology, anthropology, oral tradition, and comparative religion, the book traces humanity's oldest known spiritual systems-from San/Khoisan and Twa forest traditions to Saharan Paleolithic sacred landscapes and the rise of Proto-Nile religions in Ta-Seti and Nubia. Reframing Egypt as an inheritance and adaptation of older African religious systems, the work expands across West, Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa, examining sacred kingship, ancestral authority, ecological spirituality, and long-distance ritual networks.
It highlights traditions from Nubia, Kush, Nok, Ife, Kongo, the Great Lakes, the Horn of Africa, and the Swahili coast, showing how African religions evolved through continuity, synthesis, and exchange.
