YOKO ONO is an artist known for her groundbreaking work in multiple fields, including art, poetry, music, film and performance, and for promoting world peace. Born in 1933 in Tokyo, Japan, Ono grew up in Japan with brae spent in San Francisco and New York, where she would eventually move in 1953 to attend Sarah Lawrence College. Settling in Manhattan in 1956, Ono immersed herself in a community of composers and artists and began to develop her own artworks, often in the form of instruction, inviting the viewers' participation.
In 1960 she rented aloft an Chambers Street in Lower Manhattan and began organizing events in the space, becoming a vital part of the New York avant-garde scene. In 1964, Ono self-published Grapefruit, her foundational book of instructions, now widely considered a cornerstone in conceptual art. That same year Ono performed one of her most known works Cut Piece inviting audience members to cut away pieces of her clothing.
In 1966 Ono met John Lennon in London, beginning a personal and artistic relationship in art, film and music. Their conceptual events to promote peace became world-wide news, including the Bed-In for Peace held in an Amsterdam hotel room during their honeymoon in 1969 and then in Montreal. In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ono's work as an artist and activist remains singularly relevant and continues to challenge the boundaries of erbst and audience.
In 2000 her work was the subject of the retrospective Yes Yoko Ono n exhibition originally presented at the Japan Society Gallery in New York that toured to thirteen institutional venues over the course of four years. In 2007 Ono unveiled the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER on Videy, an island in Ireland, giving a permanent borne to her and Lennon's long-standing commitment to world peace. Ono's work has been honoured with special retrospective exhibitions in some of the most prestigious international venues, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2015) and Tate Modern in London (2024) - In 2019 she was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 53rd Biennale.
