Résumé

Unsuk Chin wrote her Violin Concerto in 2001 as a commission from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester in Berlin, where she was composer-in residence. The premiere was given in January 2002 in Berlin by Viviane Hagner and the DSO under its music director, Kent Nagano and the piece won the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition in 2004. In four sections with a slow movement and a quasi-scherzo between the outer movements, one could speak of a 'symphonie concertante' in which the orchestra drapes itself around the soloist from whom the composer demands extreme virtuosity.
The instrumentation is traditional, expanded by two harps and a large percussion section. Instrumentation : violin and orchestra
