What does it mean to choose the people you live with and among ? Intentional communities offer a multitude of architectural, economic, environmental, and social advantages. Such collective housing alternatives gained popularity in Denmark in the 1960s and in the United States in the 1990s, laying the groundwork for today's many inventive designs. Together by Design : The Art and Architecture of Communal Living explores contemporary efforts to conceive and build communities of mutual support and self-governance that balance sociability, privacy, and sustainability.
