Hurtling past the downtrodden communities of Depression-era America, painter Val Welch arrives at the rural town of Dawes, Wyoming for his next job : a mural for the new Post Office. Kindly hosted by wealthy art lover John Long and his wife Eve, Val can't help but be entranced by the couple, as rumours swirl of Eve's time in a western swing band and Long's past as a WWI sniper. One day, Eve flees home with a valuable painting in tow, and Long recruits Val to hit the road and track her down.
