Having been deeply impressed by Chimamand Ngozi Adichie's début novel Purple Hibiscus, I was pleasantly surprised with the author's talent as a short story writer, for it affords her the possibility to depict the immense diversity of her native country, Nigeria. The Thing Around Your Neck is also quite diverse in terms of tone, varying from the tragedy of corruption and war to biting satire involving patronizing Western attitudes towards Africa.
A stimulating mix pleasing to the inquisitive mind.
