'The Golden House' is an indispensable source of catharsis for surviving the very strange days characterizing the Trump years. In his typically larger than life style, Salman Rushdie weaves the somber tale of a mysterious family fleeing Mumbai after the terrorist attacks, settling in New York City where they assume new identities under Classical Era Roman names. The gap between illusion and reality is further widened through the clever device of René, a budding filmmaker and neighbour of the Godlen family who relates his subjective version of the events occurring in this pathological household. At turns amusing and thought-provoking, a worthwhile read for today.
