Michel Marthaler, geologist and honorary professor at the University of Lausanne, is an avid connoisseur of the mountains. The discovery of fossil plankton in the Valais Alps during his doctoral research led him to subsequently study the entire Alpine arc. His books and field lectures have greatly contributed to popularising geology.
