Terry Waite is best known as a hostage negotiator and a former hostage, having spent five years in solitary confinement. During those years he was denied pen or paper and so began to write in his head. Since his release from captivity in 1991, he has written several books but Tales of Tommy Twitchnose is the first one he has written especially for children. The village of Cheesethorpe is based on a real Suffolk village and the old couple on friends of the author, Jenny and Alan, who live in a converted barn there.
One day, Jenny and Alan returned home from holiday to discover that mice had eaten Alan's slippers ! Jenny also found that they had feasted on horse chestnuts and left the shells in her bed ! Thus Tommy and all his small animal friends were born. Terry hopes that these scories will give those who hear or read them as much pleasure as they have given him writing them.
