Résumé

Tales from the Perilous Realm is the definitive collection of J.R.R. Tolkien's acclaimed shorter works of fantasy and adventure. Roverandom is a toy dog who, enchanted by a sand sorcerer, gets to explore the world and encounter strange and fabulous creatures. Farmer Giles of Ham is fat and unheroic, but — having unwittingly managed to scare off a shortsighted giant—is called upon to do battle when the dragon Chrysophylax comes to town.
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil tells in verse of Tom's many adventures with hobbits, princesses, dwarves and trolls. Smith of Wootton Major journeys to the Land of Faery thanks to the magical ingredients of the Great Cake of the Feast of Good Children. Leaf by Niggle recounts the strange adventures of the painter Niggle, who sets out to paint the perfect tree. Illustrated throughout by renowned artist Alan Lee, who also provides an Afterword, this collection includes an introduction by Tolkien scholar and writer Tom Shippey and, as an appendix, the essay, "On Fairy-stories", which offers a beguiling insight into the imagination of J.R.R.
Tolkien. These five tales are written with the same skill, quality and hallmarks that made The Hobbit a beloved classic. Often overlooked, these short works are now brought together in a volume which reaffirms Tolkien's status as a master storyteller for readers of all ages.
J.R.R. Tolkien was born on 3 January 1892. After serving in the First World War, he embarked upon a distinguished academic career and was recognized as one of the finest philologists in the world. He is best known as the creator of Middle-earth and author of the classic and extraordinary works of fiction, The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. His books have been translated into 70 languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide.
He died on 2 September 1973 at the age of 81. Alan Lee won the Kate Greenaway Medal for his illustrated edition of Black Ships Before Troy. He has also completed illustrations for a number of works by Tolkien, including the centenary edition of The Lord of the Rings, diamond edition of The Hobbit and the three "Great Tales" : The Children of Húrin in 2007, Beren and Lúthien in 2017 and The Fall of Gondolin in 2018.
He worked as Conceptual Designer and Set Decorator on Peter Jackson's trilogies of films for both The Lord of the Rings and later The Hobbit, receiving the Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his work on The Return of the King. Alan Lee lives and works on the edge of Dartmoor in southwest England.
