Résumé

Out of all his symphonies, this first symphony took Brahms the longest to write. This was on the one hand, due to the composer's meticulous and extremely self-critical working method, and on the other hand, due to Beethoven's overwhelming example, which held him back. 14 years passed until this serious and complex work was completed. But it was worth the effort : none of his other works contain such a multitude of musical ideas.
Instrumentation : orchestra op. 68

L'éditeur en parle

No work other than his first symphony had occupied Brahms for such a long time. That was, on the one hand, due to the composer's meticulous and extremely self-critical working method and, on the other hand, to the fact that the overwhelming example of Beethoven deterred him. 14 years passed until the serious and complex work was completed. But it was worth the effort : None of his other works contains such a multitude of musical ideas, and, after this obstacle had been overcome, his Symphony No.
2 was written on a single summer holiday - which may have contributed to the designation 'Pastorale'. Besetzung : orchestra op. 68
