Résumé

The treatment of the family Saturniidae is based on the arrangement of species in the peerless collections of the British Museum (Natural History) in London. Although described as the third part, this is in fact the second volume to be published. This apparent eccentricity was deemed necessary to permit certain specialists time to complete their researches and revisions of particular groups of saturniid moths, that would systematically be covered in the second part.
The publication of this part follows an interval of nearly three years since the publication of Part I, and follows closely upon the publication of the author's Butterflies of Ceylon (published in association with The Wildlife Heritage Trust of Sri Lanka). The author has also completed his masterwork on the Butterflies of the World. This 17-volume series was produced over a period of 25 years, and already Part I of his revision of The Butterflies of the Afrotropical Region (Papilionidae, Pieridae, Danaidae, Acraeidae & Satyridae) has been published (1997).
In addition, Bernard d'Abrera has also written and published a now famous monograph on The Hawk Moths of the World (Sphingidae Mundi, Published by E.W. Classey, 1988), and is now preparing a new edition of his classic monograph Birdwing Butterflies of the World, first published in 1975 .
