Iceland, 1956. Fifteen-year-old Lara Marteinsdóttir spends the summer working for a couple on the small island of Videy, off the coast of Reykjavík. In early August, she vanishes. Her disappearance becomes Iceland's greatest unsolved mystery. What happened to the girl ? Did she leave, or did something happen on the island ? Thirty years later, Reykjavík celebrates its 200th anniversary and journalist Valur Róbertsson begins looking into Lara's case.
But, as his investigation deepens, it becomes clear that some people believe the past should stay buried - and will do anything to keep it that way...
