François Pompon (1855-1933) worked as an assistant to Auguste Rodin, who advised him not to imitate anyone. He used to bring his portable workbench to the Jardin des Plantes zoo and model animals from real life, seeking to express their "sense of movement". The sculptor's Polar Bear, also known as the "Pompon Bear", is still famous to this day.
