Axel Scheffler est né en 1957 à Hambourg, en Allemagne, où il a étudié l'histoire de l'art avant d'émigrer à Bath en Angleterre. Ses travaux ont retenu l'attention de bon nombre de publicitaires et d'éditeurs, et sont devenus célèbres dans le monde entier. Il a illustré beaucoup d'ouvrages pour la jeunesse ainsi que quelques livres pour adultes ; il a participé à plusieurs expositions dans son pays natal. Il vit aujourd'hui à Londres.
