Résumé

The origin of different kinds of igneous rocks can be understood in terms of the tectonic setting in which they form and in terms of the isotope compositions of strontium, neodymium, and lead they contain. This book explains the petrogenesis of igneous rocks as a consequence of tectonic processes resulting from interactions between asthenopheric plumes and the overlying lithospheric mantle. The relevant principles of isotope geochemistry are explained in chapter 1 making this book accessible to university students as well as to professionals.
The relevant isotopic data are presented in diagrammatic form. In addition, the text avoids the use of acronyms.
Gunter Faure received his B.Sc. degree in geology in 1957 from the University of Western Ontario and Ph.D. in 1961 from M.I.T. He became an Assistant Professor in 1962 at the Ohio State University and was promoted to Professor in 1968. He has been teaching popular graduate-level courses in isotope geology and aqueous geochemistry as well as a course in planetary science for undergraduates. Gunter Faure's research has ranged widely from the origin of basalt to the geochemistry of streams contaminated by acidic mine drainage.
He is coauthor of a monograph and author of two successful textbooks. Gunter Faure is the founder and former Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Isotope Geoscience and the former Executive Editor of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. In addition, he is the former President of the International Association of Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry.
