Maxwell Davies' beguiling Oboe Quartet was written for longstanding collaborators the Hebrides Ensemble and dedicated to the eminent composer and conductor Oliver Knussen on his 60th birthday. Max composed the single movement Quartet during a hot summer in Italy, deriving all of its material from an Alleluia plainsong. The resulting work is richly lyrical and rewarding for players and audience alike.
