When students are asked "what are the main problems that economists should address today ? " the main replies are usually "Inequality," "climate change," or (in 2021) "COVID-19." Bowles and Halliday show that recent advances in microeconomics provide us with analytical tools that can help us address these problems head-on. Their approach to teaching is simple : they start with an important societal problem ; next, teach one or more models to address the problem ; then allow you to discover the power of those models and their limitations.
Bowles and Halliday want you to think of economics not just as something which you know, but, more importantly, something you do, which along with others can improve how the economy works for everyone.
