" Loger cent corps et cent cœurs dans le silence ", telle fut la prière adressée par le père Marie-Alain Couturier à celui qu'il considérait comme le " plus grand architecte vivant ". Pour Le Corbusier, âgé alors de 66 ans, s'impose le souvenir de la Chartreuse d'Ema, monastère découvert lors de son voyage en Italie et érigé dès ses premiers écrits au rang d'archétype. Aussi, lorsque le père Couturier lui adresse ce programme, le projet de se confronter avec ce modèle retient-il toute son attention : il allait pouvoir construire sa propre interprétation du modèle monastique... "Create a silent dwelling place for one hundred bodies and one hundred hearts". Such was the prayer that Father Marie-Alain Couturier offered up to Le Corbusier, whom he regarded as "the greatest living architect". On hearing those words, the 66-year old Le Corbusier immediately thought of the Carthusian monastery of Ema he had visited during his trip to Italy in 1907, and which he had henceforth lauded as an archetype. With this commission he would thus at long last be able to fashion his own interpretation of the monastic model.
