La diplomatie romaine sous la République : réflexions sur une pratique

La diplomatie est devenue un champ propre de l'histoire ancienne, indépendamment des relations internationales et de l'histoire institutionnelle ou politique. La particularité de la diplomatie romaine républicaine et de ses pratiques, tient à sa progressive laïcisation, qui se perçoit dans l'usage de la négociation, dans le personnel diplomatique, ou encore dans le protocole. On étudie ici les caractéristiques et implications de cette nouvelle pratique diplomatique : ses modèles extérieurs, la construction politique et institutionnelle du processus de décision, l'autorité qui préside à la prise de décision, les savoirs qui légitiment la décision diplomatique, la garantie de son efficacité.
Diplomacy has been developping as a peculiar field of study in ancient history, regardless international relations and institutional or political history. The characteristic of Roman diplomatic practices during the Republic lies in its gradual secularization which can be seen through the use of negociation, the diplomatic staff as well as the protocol. Here are studied the features and implications of this new diplomatic practice : the external patterns, the political and institutional elaboration of the decision-making process, the authority governing to the decision-making, the knowledge on which is based the diplomactic decision and that guarantees its efficiency
