Résumé

"Whaddya want - color or black and white ? " That was the question from the store assistant who served a young Joel Meyerowitz the first time he bought film for his new camera. The year was 1962, and though he didn't realize it at the time, the question would reveal itself as one trailing profound aesthetic and even existential resonances. Unwittingly, on his very first day as an aspiring professional Thames &Hudson photographer, Meyerowitz had begun to engage with the "Question of Color".
When told that serious photography was only possible in black and white (and that color was for amateurs producing family snaps), Meyerowitz couldn't help thinking : "But the world is in color ! " This book, much of it in the photographer's own words, is an account of the invention of a new visual lexicon by one of the great pioneers of color photography.
