Résumé

The exhibition Inside Other Spaces : Environments by Women Artists 1956-1976 at Haus der Kunst presents unprecedented research into the often-overlooked contributions of women in the history and creation of immersive environments. This exhibition catalogue marks the first extensive investigation into this field, challenging the conventional narratives that have largely emphasized male artists from the United States and Europe.
The catalogue offers a journey through the works of eleven women artists, spanning continents and generations : Judy Chicago, Lygia Clark, Laura Grisi, Aleksandra Kasuba, Lea Lublin, Marta Minujin, Tania Mouraud, Maria Nordman, Nanda Vigo, Faith Wilding, and Tsuruko Yamazaki. Their innovative approaches to transforming spaces into multisensory experiences are brought to light through detailed reconstructions and replicas, owing to the original works' experimental and ephemeral nature.
The publication provides a wider and contextual framework for the artists and their works. It includes a first-time comprehensive chronology of the history of environments, allowing readers to navigate through the evolution of the concept of environments, as well as a large bibliography.
