For a long time, the autograph of Franz Schubert's Hungarian Melody was thought to be lost before it reappeared by chance in the 1920s. It is only thanks to this stroke of luck that it is now possible to understand how Schubert transformed a short melody from what was then Hungary first into this bravura piece and later into a version for piano four-hands.
