Résumé
Feminist writing on politics has challenged the assumption that laws are gender-neutral and has revealed the mechanisms through which women have been excluded from full participation in modern democracies. In developing strategies to change this situation, feminist writers have produced fascinating insights into and ideas about how democracy works. In studies of, and debates about, citizenship, nationalism and justice, new theories of difference, representation and democracy have been created.
This book attempts to illuminate these debates through studies of women's involvement in grass-roots organisations in Northern Ireland. In a number of case-studies this volume uncovers and comments on the methods devised by the groups and organisations to allow members to participate democratically across many differences, including class, religion, political belief as welt as gender. These experiences are set in the context of Northern Ireland's political divisions and are the basis of a commentary on feminist debates about democracy.
