Résumé

Gaspard de Besse was born in Besse sur Issole on 9th February 1757. His field and force : to assault stagecoaches and rob the passengers. His motto : Frighten, but never kill. Having found a safe haven in the massif of the Estéred, he organised his headquarters in the inn of the Adrets. It is in the heart of the Gorges of Ollioules and is the wood of Cuges that he decided to build his fortress. Sowing prerevolutionary ideas in people's minds, he was arrested a first time and jailed the prison of the Observance in Draguignan.
Being helped by an external complicity, the very next day, he finds his way back to Freedom. His epic will end in an inn situated in La Valette, surrounded by the King's soldiers. He will be escorted, without any opportunity to escape. The parliament of Aix en Provence will remain merciless. Gaspard de Besse will severely be beaten to death in the public place of Aix near the church of Saint-Sauveur, on 25th October 1781.
His numerous doings have been narrated all over the Provence area making him a character of legend.
