Résumé

The Scottish National Gallery's outstanding collection of French paintings is fully described in this two-volume illustrated catalogue. Underpinned by extensive scholarly research, it includes many of the great names such as Cézanne, Degas, Delacroix, Monet, Poussin and Watteau. Since the Scottish National Gallery first opened to the public in 1859, its collection of French paintings has continued to grow, thanks to inspired and enlightened purchases and many generous donations.
This collection's fascinating history, reflecting changing tastes and priorities over the years, is related in the introductory essay. Each artist is introduced by a concise biography, followed by detailed entries on the individual works. Illustrating and describing over 190 works of art, this catalogue is the definitive text on the French paintings in Scotland's national collection. The catalogue has been researched and written by Professor Michael Clarke c BE, former Director of the Scottish National Gallery, and Professor Frances Fowle, Senior Curator at National Galleries of Scotland, with conservation notes from Lesley Stevenson, Senior Paintings Conservator at the National Galleries of Scotland.
