Fable for the End of the World

Inesa lives with her brother in a half-sunken town where they struggle to make ends meet, and their mother has secretly accrued an enormous debt. Melinoë is an assassin. Despite neural reconditioning, she broke down on camera during her last Gauntlet, and now she desperately needs redemption. When Inesa learns that her mother has offered her as a sacrifice to absolve the debt through the Gauntlet, she and her brother hatch a desperate plan - to run.
Mel pursues Inesa, and they are soon cut off from the rest of the world. Alone in the apocalyptic wasteland, they begin to wonder if there's more to life than surviving or killing - and if they might be falling in love.
