Résumé
The current issue of Emblematica presents a number of articles on various aspects of emblems and emblematic strategies, including close readings and theoretical approaches as well as interpretations of printed and applied emblems, ranging geographically from England to Italy and from Prussia to Geneva and Paris. The articles investigate a broad spectrum of topics, including printers' devices, emblems on triumphal arches, an emblematic ceiling in Florence, emblematic practices in the works of Holbein and Erasmus, emblems and music, and emblematic religious devotions.
These contributions demonstrate the extent to which emblematic strategies permeated all aspects of early modern enterprise, from celebrating, and, indeed, shaping the representation of, the monarch to printing, designing sophisticated decoration schemes, and integrating allegory and emblems into both preaching and personal devotions. These contributions show that “emblematic” formats in layout and design suggest emblematic readings of texts and images not traditionally considered to be emblems themselves.
They rely on original research conducted in archives, palaces, and libraries, around the globe as well as online, reflecting the interdisciplinary scholarship and tireless efforts of the emblemstudies community. This volume continues Emblematica. An Interdisciplinary Journal for Emblem Studies and what would have been Volume 23 of that journal which ended when AMS Press ended publication in early 2017.
