Sub-titled 'The Mysteries of Light', the composer states that this work attempts to revive the ancient practice of writing music based on the structure of the Rosary. The most famous example of this is the collection of the Rosary (or Mystery) Sonatas for violin by Heinrich Biber, written in the late 17th century. MacMillan's concerto is based on a set of five meditations introduced by John Paul II in 2002, the Luminous Mysteries.
In spite of this, rather than being devotional the work proceeds in quasi-dramatic fashion, not too distant in concept from a tone poem. Commissioned by Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra on the occasion of the Orchestra's Centennial, and first performed with soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet in April 2011. Mit dem Untertitel "The Mysteries of Light" [Die Mysterien des Lichts] macht der Komponist deutlich, dass dieses Werk versucht, die alte Praxis des Notenschreibens auf der Grundlage der Struktur des Rosenkranzes wieder aufleben zu lassen. Das berühmteste Beispiel dafür ist die Sammlung der Rosenkranzsonaten (oder Mysteriensonaten) für Violine von Heinrich Biber, die er Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts geschrieben hat.
MacMillans Konzert basiert auf einem Satz von fünf Meditationen, die 2002 von Papst Johannes Paul II. eingeführt wurden, den Lichtmysterien. Dessen ungeachtet verläuft das Werk, statt andächtig zu sein, auf quasi-dramatische Weise, von der Idee her nicht allzu weit entfernt von einer Tondichtung. In Auftrag gegeben von Osmo Vänskä und dem Minnesota Orchestra anlässlich des 100jährigen Bestehens des Orchesters und uraufgeführt im April 2011 mit dem Solisten Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
